Wave basin
The QGHL wave basin (and its accompanying equipment) can be used to investigate coastal processes where three-dimensional effects may be significant. For example, interactions between waves, currents and varying water levels with longshore-variable coastal structures.
About
- The large basin is configurable in 5m width increments, up to a maximum width of 20m.
- The basin has a concrete floor, onto which a representative bathymetry can be constructed. Bathymetries are typically built out of a compacted road base and fixed with a concrete cap.
- We may also use a range of other materials to assist with managing the wave field. For example, waveguides direct waves towards the model domain and minimise energy loss. In addition, we can strategically place rocks outside the model domain to dissipate wave energy and reduce unwanted reflections.
- Typical scales for the wave basin models range between 1:20 and 1:60.
- The basin area is configurable to any dimensions up to its extent of 42m length, 20m width and 0.8m* depth.
* It may be possible to increase the height of the basin walls where future projects may benefit from increased water depth or vertical bathymetry extents.
